That's the way Michael Freedman views success in business. Just emerging from a major restructure of his computer training empire, Michael says that it is easy to think "I've made it, I'm successful," then someone turns out the lights. His Story - At his peak, Michael had 2 full time trainers and 5 casual trainers. They were in Training Centres from Ballina to Tweed Heads and out west, running up to 35 computer and business courses per school term. That equated to 1500 adult students a year. Michael himself was teaching face-to-face for up to 40 hours a week. Overnight the government changed the labour market programs. Companies spent less on training and Michaels' business began loosing clients. Michael went on to say that "Over Christmas I did some hard thinking and started from scratch. I re-invented the wheel and rolled out a lean mean training machine," with a staff of only one - Michael himself!
Michael noted "Success now has a different meaning to me, than it did two years ago. Spending time with my family and offering quality training to selected clients." To that extent Michael is now on the success journey, working 25 hours a week, taking his daughter to school and having fun. "The best part is I have only taken a small drop in income".
Michael has so much time now he is working on a book "Excellence in Training". The book is about the things that make a good trainer great and can be applied to managers and professionals. Michael is incorporating it into his professional speaking agenda which has started to blossom.
So what are the three things Michael attributes to his business success:
1. Get the support of your family
2. Build a support network 3. Be honest, both within yourself and your clients
Michael has a message - 'At the end of the day, win or loose, you have to be able to live with yourself'
