One of the problems that seems to beset too many people in small business is small-mindedness. Small-mindedness can come about in many ways besides banging your head with a hammer just to get the brain cells functioning on a cold and frosty morning. Some people enter into business thinking that all they have to do is buy a profitable enterprise and than start counting dollar notes. Others think that all they have to do is become a consultant and people will pay them what they believe they are worth. One person, we will call him "Con", recently told me he was a consultant to big business. Small business did not interest him because he is a consultant to the corporate world. In his small-mindedness, Con thought of himself as a consultant to only big business but failed to recognize that he himself was a small business. It is easy for a small business operator to get caught up in small-mindedness. Too often a small business operator deals with big business, or may even be a consultant to the corporate world, yet overlooks that his or her business employs less that ten people, or , as in the case of Con, only himself.
It is easy for a person to have tickets on themselves. You don't have to have been born into a family of privilege and have a father or mother who sits in the board rooms of large companies. Like Con, many children in this country have a silver spoon placed in their mouth at birth and expect their parents to feed them, even though their parents are not in the billionaire class. This might not apply to you but the lesson may be invaluable. There are many consultants to big business, trying to make a living, who do not realise that there is more to being a consultant and a small business owner than what big business might have you believe.
