More and more successful entrepreneurs and business executives these days are discovering the benefits of being coached. In fact, if you want to succeed today you have to continually fine tune your performance and produce bigger and better results in an increasingly competitive world. Often we try to achieve this by working longer and harder only to discover that, that's not the answer. When we were youngsters learning to play various sports, we had coaches and teachers to inspire us and to show us ways to keep improving our game. When our attention wandered; when we weren't playing as a team; when we didn't keep our eye on the ball, the coach's job was to keep us on track. If the runs weren't on the board at half-time, the coach would fire up the team and reinforce or change the strategy. The coach was an observer and mentor. The coach kept an eye on the individual players as well as on the big picture.The coach's job was to bring out the best in us, to teach us teamwork and to get us to consistently perform well so that we would be a winning team. It was more than just winning a single game. It was consistent and constant improvement. A winning team could be relied upon to produce a winning performance under pressure. So what do we do when we come to play the game of life? How can we be winners in business? Who can we turn to for help in achieving our goals? Who helps us when we've lost our drive and enthusiasm? Who do we turn to when we can't remember how to kick a winning goal?
For most people the answer to these questions is simply: no one. They try and struggle through on their own. They simply try to muddle through. Others try to bulldoze their way through by sheer will power. Another approach is to get together with your peers and look for solutions by networking or brainstorming.
